Jonah to" Nineveh"

Jonah Chapter 1 :2  Go to “Nineveh

In Old testament ,one of the shortest book in Holy Bible is Jonah.
He is a famous character, and a prophet .He lived long time ago, even to day we can absorb some lessons from his life and experiences.
His name find in New testament also In St: Mathew 12 : 40 Jesus said  “ As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth“ What Jesus meant was the son of man too would be put to death and held in the bowels
Of earth three days and then God will arise Him from the dead .Jesus said that is a greatest sign of his death and resurrection.
Nineveh was a city exceedingly corrupt, with sin they associated a religion involve with sex .They did not know God.
God had invite Jonah to go to Nineveh because the behavior of the people in that city made very dissatisfied. God had a compassion on them .If they possessed some kind of knowledge of true God it is   unelaborated.
Here is God Loving father, who wishes to save a city from destruction.
When God had invite Jonah to go to Nineveh
In Chapter 4 verse 2 says
Jonah prayed to the Lord and said,
” I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing.”
Nineveh was about five hundred miles away from Jonah’s home town.
But God commissioned Jonah to Nineveh and tell them to repent.
Some reasons why Jonah reluctant to go to Nineveh may be journey is most difficult, those days no transport available had to walk or on camel .Task given to him by God was very difficult.
Jonah Ch1 : 3 – 11 says,
3But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep. 6The captain came and said to him, ‘What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.’
.7 The sailors* said to one another, ‘Come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us.’ So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, ‘Tell us why this calamity has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?’ 9‘I am a Hebrew,’ he replied. ‘I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.’ 10Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, ‘What is this that you have done!’ For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so.
11 Then they said to him, ‘What shall we do to you, that the sea may quieten down for us?’ For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. 12He said to them, ‘Pick me up and throw me into the sea;
Now we saw that Jonah deliberately chose to go to the wrong way.
But we may go wrong way without knowingly.
Very often we cannot hear God speaking to us when we are trying to
making  an important decision.
There are instance we come across a junction where there two roads and we do not know which will lead to Nineveh and which to Tarshish.
Before taking a decision Pray “ Lord I have to make a important decision ,to day therefore let me stay more hours with you in prayers.
Definitely you will guide to right path to “ Nineveh”.

When I Am Weak

St Paul’s Vision
2 Corinthians Ch 12 :10
“When I am weak ,then I am Strong”
When I was at the age 15,My father died at the age of 49.He was an accountant at  a reputed firm. Cause for the death was thrombosis.
He collapse in my presence at his bed room while dressing to go to see the doctor.
It is a awful incident. He was the only bread winner in our family.
There are times we experienced sorrow, agony humiliation an pain.
No one cannot say ,except kids that he or she hasn’t had his or her share of suffering in this world.
What are those . Loss of a dear one, severe illness, Loss of a job, failure at an examination, when we are condemned by society, Loss of property, wealth ect.
When such situations arise how we feel. No doubt we feel sad ,dejected, humiliated  and weak.
St Paul has given a massage to who are thus affected. In his life he has gone through many sufferings. ”When I am weak , then I am strong” goes to say in his second letter on the Corinthians.
2 Corinthians 12 : 7 to 10 you read   to keep* me from being too elated, a thorn was given to me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.* 8Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power* is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.”
This statement made by Paul is absolutely true and holds good even to day even though it has passed centuries of years. then when he appeals to God asked Him to make him strong , God in turn makes him strong than he was.
The problem seems to be with us is not that we are too weak ,but we are too strong for God .Many of us feel self sufficient ,because of we are in our good health, having money and wealth ,education and we can to day lead comfortable lives without seeking God’s help.
In the Bible we read the story of King Uzziah, at the age of sixteen he became King in Jerusalem for fifty –two years .Read Chronicle Chapter 26 for his story .We see he was young and weak, but God gradually made him strong King .When he Was strong his heart was lifted up to destruction .In 2 Chronicles 26 :5 we read “ He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper.
Verse 8 says  The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread even to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong. “
And Verse 15 says “In Jerusalem he set up machines, invented by skilled workers, on the towers and the corners for shooting arrows and large stones. And his fame spread far, for he was  marvelously  helped until he became strong. “
But in the same Chapter Verse 16 says  “ But when he had become strong he grew proud, to his destruction”
In verse 21 says “ King Uzziah was leprous* to the day of his death, and being leprous* lived in a separate house, for he was excluded from the house of the Lord.”
How true it is of our lives as well .From our infancy God has given us good health, wealth, happiness and prosperity, in other words He helped us to become Strong and can depend of our own.
God has made us strong can lead us to our destruction unless we renounce dependence on our resource.
